The first T-Rex to Australia (2010)... and back! Kasbah in the centre of the Red Continent (Australia)

Deutsch

Leider ging BREMACH 2016 pleite.

This is Kasbah, our exploration truck, with which we sometimes explore the more remote corners of the Earch. These have been our most important trips so far:

The following key factors have led us to the choice of vehicle and to the design presented on this page:

    • Off-road performance like a Landrover / Landcruiser

    • Voyages primarily through warm countries, however, also the option to sit inside on a miserable day

    • Enough space for long-term travelling gear plus two bicycles

    • Autonomy for at least 1000 km on unsealed roads

    • Weight max. 3500 kg (fully laden) — weight limit for "regular" cars in Switzerland

    • Reasonably hard to break into and possibly no equipment attached to the outside of the vehicle to prevent theft

    • Comfort level closer to camping in a tent than camping with a caravan — we are not after the same level of comfort as at home

It's based on a BREMACH T-Rex chassis with a wheel base of 3010mm adapted by Allrad-Christ. The engine (3.0 litres, 4 cylinders, turbo diesel, EURO4 with particle filter), the gear box and many other components are identical to those found in the IVECO Daily van. The maximum torque of 400 Nm is available from 1200 rpm. The low-torsion chassis, the driving cab, the axles and the reduction box are by Bremach. The vehicle hosts two diesel tanks of 150 litres each and four water tanks with a total of 110 litres.

Unfortunately, BREMACH went bankrupt in 2016, however, spare parts and maintenance are not a problem yet (as of 2022).

The body is our own design. It is very compact and was manufactured by Ormocar in Germany using mainly 40 mm glassfiber sandwich panels bonded with construction glue (no bolts or rivets). The interior sizes are 3.02 x 1.92 x 1.68 m (LxWxH); the roof pops open to allow for full stand-up height and good ventilation in warm climate. The interior design and equipment is minimal — and it will essentially stay this way. The kitchen is at the rear (outside, large hatch). We carry a portable toilet and we can rig up an indoor shower operated out of a small insulated stainless-steel tank. The body rests on 6 silent blocks designed and mounted by Allrad-Christ . The windows are made-to-measure single-glazing boat windows by Bootsfenster.com. The specification of the box (available in German only) contains 3D models and sketches of the interior design.

The vehicle has been certified for a max. gross mass of 3500 kg and is registered in Switzerland as a camper van. It is 2.80 m high and fits into a high-cube container, see here. It was/is a temporarily import to Australia under a Carnet de Passages and consequently ran/runs under Swiss registration and license plates.

Have a read of the article about Kasbah in the monthly club magazine Torque of the Range Rover Club of Victoria (English).

An excellent PDF document about the T-Rex can be found here. A gallery of expedition mobiles in the "Bremach class" can be found at bremach-reisemobile.org, of T-Rex-based applications and expedition mobiles at Bremach.

What Australians said about Kasbah

    • "A wild machine"

    • "A wild-looking machine"

    • "A wicked machine"

    • "That's a big rig you've got there"

    • "She's a ripper"

    • "Does it do what it looks like it does?"

    • "Won't argue with that" (the driver of a big Landcruiser after we beat him to a parking spot unintentionally)

    • "Snazzy car!"

The square hatch hosts the bikes and chunky equipment, the rear hatch the kitchen

The rear window does not open by design to keep out dust and dirt. It's protected from light and burglary by a set of recovery tracks. The open roof lets nature spill right into the bedroom — a feature we would not want to miss anymore, especially not with Australia's birds.

The kitchen is open air, the hatch protects the cook (and the food!) from the rain. This design helps to reduce the moisture inside at times of wet or cold weather. The drinking water (black tank) is pumped through a series of filters and UV-tretaed when filling the tank.

The roof opens over a large area for stand-up height and good ventilation

The bed is 1.92 x 1.40 m and consists of a Fanello mattress that features good ventilation from underneath

The sideboard behind the table proved to be very practical. The chairs are stowed away for driving.

The boxes can be secured when travelling; the fridge sits on a drawer tray

The windows are protected from insects by Softscreens (hook-and-loop mount), the door by a retractable Ultrascreen and the screen for the pop-up roof is home made (old picture).
